green clean
When I was pregnant I became more cautious about what I cleaned my house with as I was more aware of what I was breathing in (my highly sensitive sense of smell probably helped) and since then I’ve gone greener with my cleaning. I found this great article on the CBC site about making your own household cleansers. But I’m guessing you may have enough on your plate what with making homemade baby food, or toddler food, or family food, so if you’re interested in buying green I used to get Dusting Divas products, but they seem to have moved to Cape Breton, so that’s sort of moot. There’s also Simple Green, which I’ve heard of but not used. Then there are Method products which are non-toxic and environmentally friendly and which I love, love, love. There are lots of great options at health food stores too.

I’m a big fan of the Earth Friendly brand Parsley Spray as an all purpose spray cleaner. It works great, has a very mild but fresh scent from the parsley essence in it and it only has like 3 ingredients. Plus, every time I pull it out Miss P can not get enough of musing on how “unbelievable it is that there’s parsley in there!”.

I’m with ya on the ‘Method’ soap. My boys were reluctant hand washers until this ‘foaming soap’ appeared by the sink. Now my eldest will wash his hands whenever asked and even goes in on his own cuz he likes the foaming effect so much. And the novelty doesn’t wear off b/c the soap comes in different colours! How exciting is that to a 3-year old!?

And for those of you with a Scottish bent, you can even fill up the ‘Method’ container with cheaper (i.e., industrial COSTCO size) liquid soap and it still comes out foamy.

I too became concerned a few years ago with the amount of chemicals I was exposing myself and my family too, as my 10 year old daughter and myself were both suffering from countless migraines.
I found Norwex Enviro Products whose products include high quality microfibre which when used with water and no chemicals will remove 99.9% of the bacteria from your home! What seperates Norwex from the other “green” cleaners out there, is that most of the Norwex product line is not consumable so you are not only saving the environment and living healthier, you are also reducing your consumption of “products” and are in fact saving money over time.
I liked the products so much, I became an independent consultant, and whether you buy them from me or someone else, you will be doing yourself and your family a favour by checking them out. My website is at http://www.reducechemicaluse.ca
