A few winners at our house have been some of the seeds/plants that lead to faster rewards -- for the shorter attention spans of kids. Radishes are ready to eat in 28 days and so the sprouts come up quickly and are pretty satisfying to check in on regularly. I grow 16 radishes in a 1 square foot plot of my garden so you could grow a number in a container. Beans are also kind of awesome for how fast they sprout up and they always remind me of science class as a kid growing bean seeds in styrofoam cups (though I don't recommend that). A little alpine strawberry plant won't get you a pie but it will provide a decent season of wee but tasty little berries to eat. Somewhat strangely my step daughter also loves to eat all kinds of things when she's "garden grazing" that she's not so crazy about on her plate at dinner. On that list? Kale. She'll eat it by the handful in the garden, which then makes me feel better when her dad gives her a second bowl of icecream on the couch that evening...
